Ghost Bikes

Just across the street from the site of the former Foster memorial in Oakland, Pittsburgh, is a ghost bike commemorating a local cyclist who was killed by a car in 2015. Each year new flowers are put out, and the bike is lovingly maintained by people mourning the loss of a loved one. We are reminded that some memorials persist because communities actively tend to them. We may also consider that memorials persist because they are situated in places that are easy to access. The ghost bike on Forbes is perhaps easier to maintain than a ghost bike on the side of a busy road with no sidewalks, for example.
